HISTORIC: The city of Garrett was platted in 1876 and named after the president of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. Garrett retains many historic resources that date back to its golden age as a prominent railroad division point.
The current downtown revitalization project enhances and
builds upon this heritage with new sidewalks and lighting.
CITY AMENITIES: The Garrett-Keyser-Butler School Corporation stresses character and leadership development in its three schools: Garrett High School, Garrett Middle School, and J.E. Ober Elementary School. St. Joseph Elementary School offers quality private elementary school services. The Garrett Public Library serves Garrett, Keyser, and Butler townships.
There are many recreational activities available in Garrett. The Garrett Heritage Festival is held the 3rd and 4th of July and includes crafts, food, games, and a parade. The Garrett Historical Museum displays local heritage that dates back to the early 1800’s. The Garrett Country Club provides an 18-hole championship golf course open to the public. Feick Park includes the Garrett community pool, which features a giant water slide, several baseball diamonds, and basketball courts. There is also the Indian Springs Campground which features three small lakes, swimming and boat rentals. The Jordan Wetlands offers recreation for nature lovers. The city has many parks: East Side Park, West Side Park, Union Street Park, Ocker Park, and Heritage Park.
GOVERNMENT and INDUSTRY: The current population of Garrett, based on the 2003 U.S. Census Bureau is 5,762. Since 1994, Garrett has been growing at a rapid rate with more than 733 acres annexed for industrial, commercial, and residential development. Garrett’s industrial base ranges from the Wal-Mart distribution center and TRW automotive to CSX Transportation and Electric Motors. Garrett’s Industrial Park is located Northeast of the city.
Garrett’s housing market is also growing. Six subdivisions, containing 310 platted lots have been approved in the past 12 years. Vehicular traffic can now travel unimpeded under the CSX railroad tracks in downtown Garrett through the Herbert P. Kleeman underpass.
The Garrett Police Station includes a Police Chief, Captain, Detective, eleven full time officers and fourteen reserve officers. The Garrett Fire Department serves Garrett, Altona, and Keyser Township. Elected officials serve a four year term and include a mayor, five city council members, city planner, city attorney, and a clerk-treasurer.
