AMENITIES: The Garrett Public Library serves the Garrett-Keyser-Butler area. The Garrett Heritage Festival is held the 3rd and 4th of July and includes crafts, food, games and a parade. The Garrett Historical Museum displays local heritage that dates back to the early 1800’s. The Garrett Country Club provides an 18-hole championship golf course open to the public. Feick Park includes the Garrett Community Pool, which features a giant water slide, several baseball diamonds and basketball courts. The city has many parks: East Side Park, West Side Park, Union Street Park, Ocker Park and Heritage Park. The Jordan Wetlands offers recreation for nature lovers. Indian Springs Campground is located in a natural, attractive setting with three fishing lakes/ponds.
EDUCATION: Garrett-Keyser-Butler School Corporation includes the J.E. Ober Elementary School, Garrett Middle School and Garrett High School. St. Joe Elementary School offers private elementary education.
EMERGENCY SERVICES: The Garrett Police Station includes a police chief, captain, detective, eleven full time officers and fourteen reserve officers. The Garrett Fire Department serves Garrett, Altona, and Keyser Township
GOVERNMENT: Elected officials serve a four year term and include a mayor, five city council members, a city planner, a city attorney and a clerk treasurer.
HISTORIC: The City of Garrett was platted in 1876 and named after John W. Garrett (1820-1884), president of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (1858-1884). The current downtown revitalization project enhances and builds upon this heritage with new sidewalks and lighting.
Garrett retains many historic resources that date back to its golden age as a prominent railroad division point.
INDUSTRIAL: Adventure Homes, Bohren Warehouse & Distribution, Centurian Industries, E-Collar, Electric Motors & Specialties, Inc., Group Dekko, Harsco Industrial IKG, Mossberg Industries, Prince Manufacturing, Tri State Bolt and Walmart Distribution Center. Garrett Industrial Park is located northeast of the city.
TRANSPORTATION: Garrett is located between two major four lane north and south bound highways (Interstate 69 and State Road 3); State Road 327 runs through Garrett. The City of Garrett is approximately 28 miles from the Indiana toll road. CSX runs a rail switching yard and terminal; the New York to Chicago (east-west) line runs through Garrett. Norfolk Southern operates a north-south rail line close to ten miles east of Garrett. Rail access to all directions is possible due to a diamond interchange at the crossing of the CSX and Norfolk Southern tracks. Vehicular traffic can now travel unimpeded under the CSX railroad tracks in downtown Garrett through the Herbert P. Kleeman underpass.
Since 1994, Garrett has been growing at a rapid rate with more than 733 acres annexed for industrial, commercial, and residential development. Garrett’s housing market is also growing. Six subdivisions, containing 310 platted lots have been approved in the past 12 years.
