The town of Waterloo was established in 1856, during the construction of what is now known as Norfolk Southern Railway Company in Grant and Smithfield Townships, DeKalb County, Indiana.
The town is served by Capital Limited and Lake Shore Limited Amtrak trains daily at the historic Waterloo Depot Train Station. In October, 2010 the Town of Waterloo received a $1.8 million TIGER II grant from the US Department of Transportation for the Waterloo Train Station Improvements Project. Waterloo has the third highest ridership in Indiana, next to the much larger cities of Indianapolis and Lafayette. (

AMENITIES: The Francis Thomson Memorial Park offers a pavilion and a historic train depot for year-round use and a large playground area. A bicycle-pedestrian trail, two baseball diamonds, as well as the Waterloo Grant Township Public Library and many clubs and organizations are committed to a positive community spirit. Waterloo offers the advantages of a small town atmosphere, but is close to major shopping facilities and other conveniences.
EDUCATION: Students attend the Waterloo Elementary School, DeKalb Middle School and DeKalb High School.
EMERGENCY SERVICES: Police and fire departments are located downtown.
GOVERNMENT: The town hall is located in the heart of downtown. A town manager helps oversee activities in town and implement projects, including economic development. Meetings are scheduled for the town council on the second Tuesday of every month at the library.
INDUSTRY: Auburn Plastic Solutions, Charleston Metals, Elsie Manufacturing and RP Wakefield, Nucor Building Systems, Star Technologies, a UPS distribution center, Waterloo International Funeral Supply and Waterloo Reclycling Center, LLC. The Waterloo Industrial Park is situated on the west side of Waterloo, immediately southeast of the intersection of Interstate 69 and US 6. Norfolk Southern rail runs along the south side of the park.
UTILITIES: Waterloo owns and operates its municipal sewer and water utilities. Steuben County REMC is the natural gas provider and NIPSCO supplies electric utilities.
